That being said, the increase in the number of fast food restaurants has had an adverse effect on the health of the general population. Data from 2009-2010 indicates that over 78 million U.S. adults and around 12.5 million (16.9%) children and adolescents are obese. By 2030, it’s predicted that half of all U.S. adults will be obese. Currently, the annual cost of being overweight is $524 for women and $432 for men. Annual costs for being obese are even higher, at $4,879 for women and $2,646 for men. Not only is the cost of being overweight a financial burden but also a health burden.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, only one in three children is physically active every day. Physical inactivity early in life can lead to health problems later on, including obesity and diabetes. Today’s youth spend less time participating in physical activity than ever. Children now spend more than 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen, and nearly one-third of high school students play video or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Diverting kids from these habits will not only help them in the future in terms of learning capability but also in terms of their health.
